What to expect and how to proceed safely
Unsigned applications are completely normal in many cases — especially for internal tools, niche utilities, beta builds, or software distributed directly by developers. Windows shows warnings because it cannot verify the publisher’s identity, not because the file is harmful.
The guide below walks users through the process confidently and safely.
Download the Installer
Windows tags files downloaded from the internet with a security marker called the Mark of the Web.
- Save the installer (EXE/MSI) to your Downloads folder.
- Do not rename the file; this helps support troubleshooting.
- If your browser warns that the file is uncommon, this is normal for new or unsigned apps.
02
Run the Installer
Expected Warning
Windows Defender SmartScreen checks whether the app has a known reputation.
- Double‑click the installer.
- You will likely see a “Windows protected your PC” message.
- This appears because the app is unsigned and has no established reputation yet — not because it is unsafe.
03
Open the More Info Panel
This reveals the option to continue the installation.
- Click More info on the SmartScreen dialog.
- You will now see the app’s filename and the option to proceed.
04
Choose Run Anyway
Safe When You Trust the Source
This tells Windows you trust the application and want to continue.
- Click Run anyway.
- The installer will launch normally.
- If prompted for Administrator permission, click Yes.
05
Complete the Installation
Once past SmartScreen, installation works like any standard Windows program.
- Follow the on‑screen steps.
- Choose your install location.
- Finish the setup and launch the application.

Optional: Remove the Warning for Future Updates
Advanced
Unsigned apps trigger SmartScreen warnings for each new version until reputation builds.
- Add the app to Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection → Exclusions.
- Or right‑click the EXE → Properties → check Unblock.
- These steps reduce future prompts for files from the same source.
